France has committed 450,000 euros (R7.1 million) towards the University of the Witwatersrand’s Tshimologong Digital Innovation Precinct to support creative and cultural industries in Africa.

Tshimologong, Agence Française de Development (AFD), and the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS) renewed their partnership for the second time; which will see to the transformation and growth of the gaming industry for another two years.

The respective parties launched the Digital Content Hub in 2018. This saw R14 million being donated to Tshimologong to start the incubator for innovative and creative audio-visual content.

This partnership opened the hub as a gateway to new connections in the African and French market enabling them to connect with industry experts in animation, video, gaming, virtual reality, digital arts, and music.

As a digital content cluster that looks to foster innovative digital content creations among the youth – the hub merges creativity with digital creation. Through their academies and incubators, they expose young talent to the growing industry while focusing on critical skills.

The renewal of their partnership will see the hub establish a gaming incubator along with other projects and programmes. As reported by Newzroom Afrika, the incubator will allow start-up gaming studios access to training to assist them develop commercially ready products, as well as their entrepreneurial and technical skills.

Lesley Williams CEO of Tshimologong explains that South Africa needs to meet the demand where creativity and digital meet. “There’s a massive demand for African aesthetics in creativity, the world is calling for digital content from Africa and we need to meet that demand,” she said.
